I was just thinking the other day about opening the tip mechanically. I have a rotary tool that has a cylinder-shaped stone I can put on it (very small stone.) I was thinking I could turn the thing on, and then very slowly push the closed tip against it until the tip was open. Then scrape. I realize this is off the wall for standard reed making, but I'm off the wall on so many things it doesn't matter.
One video I watched directed to scrape just the tip until it was thin enough to open the reed, and that kept the sides from tending to open as it dried.
