Wrap the reed in PTFE (plumbers') tape so it covers the twisted end of the wire, then you won't catch it on your lip.

Don't use sellotape or anything sticky that will leave residue on the reed and cling film isn't much good as it comes undone - PTFE is best as it won't come undone when it gets wet.
