On large-scale commercially produced Oboe reeds, the wire is placed to enable the player to make the reed opening larger if needed. To do this, slide the wire away from the string a small distance.

Wire is normally not used on Oboe reeds by one-person reed makers because their quality control process is better and they build the proper opening into each reed.

On English Horn reeds, wire is often used to allow the player to adjust the reed opening and as a stabilization device.
