Also to add why the majority of cracks I have seen were caused by temperature changes, another cause of cracks (that we can prevent) is striking the keywork especially the posts.

Other causes of cracks which we cannot prevent (and probably related to the remark about the Yamaha 841) is built in wood stress. The wood sections are shaped, drilled and posts attached and this puts stress in the wood that will cause it to give---crack.

Anyone who has ever drilled an undersize hole and watched the wood crack will get the idea. Many cracks I also have seen appear around the posts. Not much you can do but get it fixed (usually pinned). Improper pinning can also cause problems.

As far as oiling the instrument making it "soft"-- the wood found in oboes is dense hardwood. While oil does soak in some, better oil than water. We all know about ice cubes breaking pipes and containers.

I've never seen oil as a cause of cracks.
