Re: Difference between synthetic top and plastic lined oboes

I play a clear cast acrylic Marigaux 2001 oboe. It is generally, warmer sounding and we will say 'darker' than any wooden oboe I have played. But I also find that Marigaux bites tend to be a little darker in general. This particular horn is a gem and I will never go back to my previous brand of horn (a well-known pro horn) as many of the acoustic 'flaws' in the older horn are not a problem in the new horn.

Two students have fox oboes: one plastic and one an 800 model. The all wood 800 model is definitely 'warmer' sounding than the all plastic. I guess it all depends on what Reed setup you use and what you are comparing, as well as your definition of dark sounding as well.

I have played a few laubins, some wood, some with the rubber sleeve inserted, and honestly felt the rubber sleeve horns had more depth than those that didn't. All were from approximately the same time period.

It all depends on your setup and what you are looking for.

Good luck!
