The 2016-2017 season will likely be my last as Principal Oboe for my orchestra, as I plan to give the chair to the young lady who currently plays 2nd, at the beginning of the 2017-2018 season, as she is approaching the age that I was when I got it. I will "skooch" over and play 2nd/Cor. We're good friends, and I'll also help teach her all those other things that Principal Oboes do.
The last year or so, I've noticed that I really have to gauge my stamina (I'm an asthmatic in my 60's, and it is getting harder to hide). And, it seems that I'm often playing the repertoire for the 2nd or 3rd time. So, she may as well put her youth to good use.
I notified her, and the conductor. Because I will have served in the Orchestra for over 30 years, the conductor has offered to program 1 or 2 pieces of my choosing, but no full symphonies, as part of the program is already filled. So, 1 or two medium-short works--things that I may want to play Oboe I on before I skooch over. Oboeriffic works, but orchestral works, not concertos.
I'm a big Delius fan, but already did Florida Suite. Know of any other oboe-y Delius piece? Thought about the Dvorak Serenade Op 44, but I'd like to play it with my friends, and there are no flute parts. Thought about St. Saens Bacchanale. I really like lyrical things, and please, no prestos, or things that sound mosquito-y. I've done the Satie Gymnopedie. I've done the Spartacus. I prefer full orchestral, but...?
Any suggestions? Ideas?
