Your tie length is not fixed. It is a function of the size of the small end of the tube. Some tubes, like the Lorée tubes are fairly small. Others, like Mark Chudnow's, are larger. Since the cane is tapered, it must be tied on at a point where the cane is wide enough to wrap around the end of the tube and seal tightly, but not so wide that there is no tube under the thread. This will spring open the sides of the reed further up.

To find this 'magic' length, find the spot where the sides close evenly one turn before the end of the tube, then wrap to the end of the tube. The last turn will snug the sides firmly to seal, without generating problems elsewhere.

Measure, and that is your wrap length. If all your tubes are the same, that will be the wrap length for that shape. (My practice is to measure from the fold to the top of the wrapping, marking that distance on the edge of the cane and using that mark to set the end of the tube. this avoids needing to juggle ruler, thread, tube and what not at the same time...)

Enjoy!
