Re: Oboe Adjustment for an A natural flat pitch

I agree that all aspects of the problem MUST be examined before any modifications are made to an Oboe; however, I will share my story.

I have a gorgeous Marigaux 901 - with a warm resonant inviting tone. When I bought the Oboe I had some changes made to the key work to better fit my fight hand ... and I had a few notes undercut etc ... to improve the overall consistency of the scale and timbre.

I adjusted my reed style, changed shaper tip, staple opening and length all to better fit my Marigaux.... (different from my old Loree).

Sometimes it takes times to assess a problem .... I noticed after playing the Oboe for awhile .... there was a slight discrepancy between the Octaves (if the A=440 then the upper register was sharp). I compensated for this by making very good reeds; however, I started to contemplate whether I should buy another Oboe....something I really didn't want to do ... since the instrument was so lovely.

I contact Marigaux and met them at the NYC IDRS conference. They changed the octave vent ... and more importantly they worked on the bore. 75% of the adjustment was finished at the conference ... which corrected the problem and the last 25% was finished in Paris the workshop.

Well the problem was resolved! And I to continue to have a wonderful Oboe.

When I asked my repair people and the dealer why they told me the problem couldn't be solved by them. They later replied/confirmed they didn't have the proprietary reamers/tools to do the job.

So yes .... sometimes the bore must be examined ..... it should be the last intervention and recommended by a very very seasoned repair person and better yet by the manufacturer.

Bravo to Marigaux Oboe ... a great company.

Mark
