Hi ... I wonder how people diagnose the properties of a pieces of tube cane by its shavings.
I just returned 1 pound of Rigotti cane. Every piece I tried didn't gouge good. The shavings were dusty, stringy, spongy, and the machine had a difficult time with them.
The examination of the cane from the outside looked quite good. The examination of the finished piece of gouged cane .. showed the interior of the cane to be less smooth with greater definition in the micro channels (vascular bundles?).
I haven't made any reeds yet ... but my hunch is the cane will be more prone to tearing and the vibrations of the reed dampened.
