 Bizet, L'Arlesienne #2
Author: JohnW

Here's a little EH dilemma. My community orchestra is working up this piece, using the IMSLP music. The score shows an EH part in the Pastoral and the little melody (in Ab Major) is preceded by a couple of short phrases by saxophone in E Major.

The orchestra doesn't have a sax, so the conductor asked me to play those phrases on the EH.

Does anyone have a guess as to what key the sax might be for those part? If I knew that I think I'd be correct in transposing those notes to F for the EH.

Thanks,

John

If reading from an alto sax part, transpose everything down by a whole tone on cor - so everything that's in E for alto sax will be in D for cor.

Thank you Chris. My theory is all self taught and as a result, is full of gaps. Plus, as the song goes: "Don't know much about saxophones".

I've played alto sax in the first L'Arlesienne suite and the conductor took it at a fair lick at the concert as if he wanted to get it over and done with as soon as possible, but I still got a nice mention in the local paper:

Even if it is a community orchestra you should be able to ask your conductor to write out the transposed part for you.

I'll certainly have him look at what I've done, but I wanted to give it a shot myself, plus getting a first chance to try out Musescore 2.0.

Besides, it's just 6 notes :-)

Congratulations on the nice mention, Chris. Sounds like a great evening that left all the musicians on the floor panting.
