In my experience, having played for more than 25 years using a diaphragm (abdominal) vibrato and then learning throat vibrato, they are very different and require the player to develop different groups of muscles in order to use them effectively. Students who start with a throat vibrato can produce a faster, more musically useful, vibrato very soon (within a couple of months) after learning the technique. Those that start with abdominal vibrato take longer to develop enough speed.
