Yes, Peter has given a good starting point, but you should be flexible.

While I always do an initial "push" to a standard length I will always adjust the tie-length as I wrap, to ensure a perfect seal on both sides of the blade with the cross-over just below the end of the staple. This can change as a result of cane resilience, tiny variations between staples etc.

Getting the blades straight, centred, and sealing all the way from the thread to the tip is the goal, and the tie-length is just one of the factors used to achieve it.
