 types of reeds

I'm very new at oboe, but I am studying with a local oboist. I will have my 4th lesson tomorrow. I started on a variety of reeds, some mass produced, some hand made. My teacher has now provided me with a couple to use as well.

Before about my second lesson, I was playing on reeds that required I play with quite a bit of reed in my mouth to get in tune. This was one of the first things my teacher is working on changing. When I play her reeds, I must play way out on the tip of the reed, and really work to keep the pitch down.

Now when I go back to try to play the reeds I started on, they just feel silly. I can't fathom how different these reeds are.

So here's the question: I am aware that there are short scrape reeds and American (long) scrape reeds. Is there a whole style of reeds that doesn't have much of a defined tip or a style of playing that uses quite a lot of reed inside the lips? Am I seeing just one school as it were?

I hope I eventually get to making my own reeds, but I'm not a very early starter, more of a doubler really, my primary instrument is flute. I imagine I would like reeds that are just a bit flatter than the ones my teacher has set me up with. It feels like I am struggling to reach pitch and still have control over the reed. Maybe not. I've made a big change just over the last couple weeks.

Thanks for some perspective. -- Jim
