I've been relying on my teachers, friends and various folks for reed info, but now I'd like to get some of the written information that's out there.
I'm looking at these books:
The Oboe Reed Book -- Jay Light
The Reed Maker's Manual -- Weber and Capps
(also has a video)
Anyone have a comment about the value of these or other suggestions?

I find Joseph shallita's book to be the most helpful, straightforward and "common sense" approach.
If you have an ipad, go into iBooks and search nancy Ambrose kings new reed making book ---- FANTASTIC!!!!!!

I would reed them all!
The aim is to gather as much control/consistency as possible from cane selection to scraping. Every inch of the way must be an experimental control where you play with one variable while holding the others consistent.

David Webber's Reed Makers Manual was the breakthrough text for me, oh-so-many years ago. Today, my reeds are entirely different.
David Webber's book does not show you multiple variants of the same thing. Instead, it describes, in great and exhaustive detail, one method for making a reed that will work every time. It covers everything from gouging to the finishing touches of the scrape. The illustrations are simple and excellent.
I would add to this book Martin Schuring's superb Reed Diagram and then call it pretty much perfect.

P.S., if you are at all interested in short-scrape reeds, I can recommend Linda Walsh's DVD.

Linda Walsh's "The Oboe Reed Making DVD" is very thorough and well made. I bought it and shipped from Australia. I think it is now available in the US. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the comments. I have been relying on Martin Schuring's information on the ASU web site -- great stuff.
I have only made about 30 oboe reeds so far, using Victoria gouged, shaped and folded cane and Mark Chudnow's all metal staples. Also a dozen or so reeds for my cor.
My reeds are generally playable, but not consistent. I'm hoping to gradually improve my understanding of the process so I can get a more consistent sound and also make them a bit faster. I'm not ready to invest in the expensive equipment to do the whole reed from scratch, though I have ordered a thickness gauge.
BTW, I have been using a small ultrasonic cleaner to periodically clean the reeds, and they are seeming to last better. Not a controlled experiment, but it doesn't hurt anything at least.
