You really need two lamps.

I use a dentist magnifying lamp and a clip on lamp.

The first is used during the scraping of the reed and the second as a back-light to look through the reed.

Here's an example of one type:

The one I have is more powerful and is a floor stand model.

For the back-light any clip on lamp will do.
