Well, face it, if you live on the Thumb, it's an hour to get anywhere, period. You're not going to find an oboe teacher in Port Austin or Ubly. :D
Who did you talk to, that told you there was "nobody good"? Really, I'd get in touch with the SBSO. What have you got to lose? It's just a phone call. They even have a toll free number. Or send them an e-mail.
And look, this is a place that can support a flute quartet in residence--that means there are oboists around someplace.
