There seem to be two opposing group as the wether one should put the oboe in an oil bath during an overhaul or not.
I'm curious to hear your opinions!
My personal feeling would be that gently oiling the bore would be more than sufficient.

I only oil the bore during a service or overhaul.

From what I've from 2 oboe friends in CO, USA, the benefits fade rather quickly.
And here it adds $750 US to the cost of service, plus it takes an extra month in the bath.
I am still on the fence...
I kind of doubt I'd do it.
Wipe the inside and outside and inside more frequently, and learn how to deal with that if it clogs a tone hold or octave vent.
Use natural oils though, sweet almond, etc.
Good luck with it.

A friend who frequently does overhauls on old instruments told me an oil bath is only warranted if the wood is HORRIBLY dried out.

How could it possibly take a month and cost $750 for an oil bath? The wood is so dense that very little oil absorption can take place over most of that time.

I think they surround the instruments with burning beeswax candles and have cello drones in the background while it is soaking .. I'm sure it all helps.

Surely a CD of whale song or Enya would be better than cellos.
