 Martinu concerto
Author: Thomas.
Date:   2007-05-13 11:09

I recently bought a copy of the martinu concerto (piano reduction), the publisher is "eschig" and when listening a holliger recording there are many notes different from the reduction and one major difference in the last movement around the cadenza, in the sheet music there is one cadenza, at figure 10, but on the recording there are two, with a tutti between them, which sounds like the tutti repeated leading up to the cadenza, after where it is marked allegro. Is this a major error in the edition or did martinu write two versions? Or perhaps Mr Holliger was in a creative mood....?[huh]

it turns out the first edition had numerous flaws which have never been corrected (including spelling the dedicatees name wrong (!)), possibly because martinu died a year before publication. check out the following:

http://idrs.colorado.edu/Publications/DR/DR13.1/DR13.1.Brody.Martinu.html

i've gone back and edited my copy and listened to alex klein and nancy ambrose king's recordings of it, and interestingly what i ended up doing was taking some of the changes and leaving some of them...as i recall, alex klein pretty much played what was on the page and king made many of the changes, including restoring the two cadenzas..actually, i played this concerto back in '75 for the first time and already then my teacher made many of the changes (still marked in my copy) because they were obviously needed just going by ear, as the above article suggests everybody did. also check out this:

OK, Thomas, you've got me in the world of GOOGLE now...but it's amazing what one can find out!

The following link, in which Diana Doherty discusses the gaps between the printed edition and the original manuscript (which was a mess but is the only place where you can find the two cadenzas) and confirms that "everybody's got their own version", is very informative:

http://www.sydneysymphony.com/page.asp?p=646

Also very interesting is the following website dedicated to ALL that is Martinu (a Czech site apparently maintained by his daughter (?)):

http://www.martinu.cz/english/novinky.php

and related link:

http://www.martinu.cz/katalog/martinu/catshow.php?idfield=275&language=en

which reveals that the original manuscript is in Pamatnik Bohuslav Martinu, which upon further searching, appears to be the municipal museum in Policka, Martinu's Czech hometown...

http://www.muzeum.policka.net/

I assume if you contact the folks at the Martinu website, they may be able to steer you to a source for a copy of the original manuscript...they're obviously out there somewhere! Btw, I highly recommend the Nancy Ambrose King recording..it's even better than the Klein and I am a very big Klein fan...I guess the bottomline is that it's up to the performer to not only interpret what's on the page but to decide what (s)he wants there in the first place! How 20th century is that?

ok, i sent them an email asking how to obtain a copy of the original manuscript...what the hey!

another fun one (ok, I thinks it's fun) is the mozart oboe concerto (the battleax), which was once thought to be written for flute and much later discovered to have been a retreaded (by mozart himself to save time in fulfilling a commission) oboe concerto...lots of room for interpretative variation there too since the original manuscript no longer exists and anyone can speculate on which is the ideal version!

Here's the reply I received to my email to the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation:

1. They do have a copy of the original manuscript which is deposited in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris. The version with two cadenzas has never been published.

2. The critical edition of the Oboe concerto will be published in 2009 as a part of a complete critical edition prepared by the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation & Institute.

Well, that's exciting!

More exciting news! I received a scanned copy from the Institute of the two cadenzas (separated by the Tutti passage) from the original manuscript, and am currently in the process of obtaining permission to share the information, or if not, to direct interested parties to the source. The second cadenza and Tutti passage have huge X's drawn through them by the composer (apparently at the request of the dedicatee)...but the notes match the King recording exactly...

For reasons of copyright (held by Eschig) and authorsrights (held by the Martinu foundation), Bboarders interested in the second cadenza for study purposes should contact the Martinu insitute directly at martinu@martinu.cz .

Hello all,

I know this thread is old. But I thought it's still worth an update.
As some of you might know by now, it's no longer "each man to his own" and play what you feel like. I have been fortunate to study the very original manuscript at the Bibliothèque National in Paris and edit the New Edition of the Martinu Concerto together with my dear teacher and mentor - Prof. Maurice Bourgue.
The Oboe & Piano Reduction edition was published in 2008, followed by a study score and new orchestral parts, which I personally laid out, in 2010.
The debut of the new edition took place at the IDRS conference in Oklahoma, June 2010 with Nicholas Daniel Playing and myself conducting.

See my website for more information and buy the new edition anywhere - from Amazon to any sheet music dealer.

Best.

Hi Professor Porat,

Thanks for posting. Excellent job on the new edition!

Is there a recording of the Nicholas Daniel performance available? I did not see it on the IDRS website.

For those interested, a fantastic relatively recent recording:

Dear Bobo,

Thank you for your kind words.
The performance with Nick Daniel was indeed recorded on video.
Prof. Yoshi Ishikawa was in charge of the recordings, and should have it.
If you could help me persuade him to put it online - that would be absolutely great. My previous attempts were not answered.

Thank you for the link
