 Start a local oboe clinic

Greetings!

I have looked for and want to participate in a oboe clinic and there are none within the local vicinity - maybe one in Anchorage but none listed, 2 hours away. There is a fine arts festival in Fairbanks, but that is a looong drive. While it is a fine festival, it lasts two weeks. I want something that lasts one weekend.

Where do I find out about one local? Is there a special set of keywords to search, because I have tried with no results. I keep telling myself, we aren't that remote! It's 2013!

If there are no local workshops, how do I go about setting one up? I am acquainted with the local music store, the local oboe teacher. I am a member of our community band in good standing. There is a community hall we can use.

Who would I invite to teach? I have tons of questions.

Well, my location isn't even close to being that remote, yet there are barely enough oboists to have a clinic. Sure, plenty of band clinics, but oboe clinics? :(

I don't know how to set one up, but I've seen small festivals and they've enlisted the help (occupation) of churches. Good reception space for workshops/masterclasses, good main area for concerts, usually access to keyboards. 1 or 2 invited experts. If the oboe population is small, perhaps a double reed clinic would encourage our larger brethren to attend. Guest teacher/performer? Maybe someone not too far from AK. States or maybe oboists from Vancouver or Edmonton (ok, I am biased here, lol). Maybe some who regularly teach at clinics (i.e., they are vetted)? Also, I think one successful way to get visiting musicians is having more than one event for them (e.g., performance/masterclass opportunities in neighbouring city/university as well or take advantage of musician already coming to area, ....). Would offset the cost of bringing them there, too, if it can be shared. Anyway, setting up a workshop is a lot of work so making sure there would be enough people interested is a must first.

I think it is terrific that you want to have an oboe weekend! The bassoonists here do a one-day event, they play in a bassoon band (with a casual concert at the end of the day), have a masterclass with a bassoonist who is usually "brought in" for the occasion, sometimes they have a mock audition, and for lunch everyone who wants to tells a bit about their background and why they started playing - my son went for the first time this year and had a ball!

I'd get your teacher on board and count up all the students/amateurs in the area - you may want to piggyback with bassoons or clarinets to make it work. I admit I've thought about doing an Oboe Day for years and so far I've done nothing! I hope this works for you - let us know!

I remember when they surveyed North Dakota years ago and only found one oboe player there. Surely there must be more than that in Alaska.
