 Waterstone Options

I was looking online and came to find out there are a myriad of options when it comes to waterstones. The Shapton system is highly regarded by many, but it's quite expensive. I recently purchased a Naniwa combination 1000/3000 waterstone, and it is wonderful. Sold for $33 plus shipping, and what a great investment. I even comes with a plastic stone holder, though I had to modify the base with a bit of rubber electric tape to hold it firm to my counter. I have not purchased a flattening stone, but I found a proper one for $26 (by Norton) and I would also like to purchase a 8000 grit Naniwa "Super Stone" (about $60). Much like I've heard of the Shapton system, the "Super Stones" do not need to be soaked. They just require a bit of water sprinkled before sharpening. The Shapton lapping plate alone is $380, so for those of us on a tight budget but would like similar results, I'm very happy with the results first time round.
