Once tightened, the K&M double stand is very solid and has rubber feet so it won't slip around, even when placed on a piece of paper as the weight will prevent it from sliding about the place. The steel base is around the length of a piece of A4, so you do have a wide base once opened out which means no chance of your oboe/cor falling over.
I fitted a third peg to the middle of my K&M stand so I can use it for oboe, d'amore and cor, or Eb, Bb and A clarinets or combination of oboe, cor and clarinet depending what's required in pit doubling.
The only problem with floor spikes is you will need to use something like a bass clarinet/bassoon stand with them for making fast changes, so that will take up room in a cramped orchestra pit where space is usually at a premium.
