The thread is used to adjust the tightness, not lubricant. Unwind the thread until it fits snugly but not too tight. If it ever gets too loose, loosen the thread a few turns, then wind it back on (removes compaction), or add more COTTON (not nylon reed thread) thread. The tenons are very sensitive and will change frequently. I've had it in the same room for months and it still changes. If you're taking it to and fro, expect huge changes.
