Confession time...I have an audition today and the last time I picked up my oboe was summer band in July :0 The stakes are not high for me as I am non-degree, so it's not so bad!
At any rate, the chops are still good and the fingers are amazing (I have been teaching a lot of clarinet, and this appears to have helped). But the breathing sucks! My technique is okay, I just feel as though I am lacking in lung capacity and strength of breath. I feel I can't get the best out of my air because there simply isn't enough of it.
I am asthmatic, which doesn't help, but it is currently well under control. If anyone can suggest some good lung strengthening/expanding exercises (preferably that don't involve the purchase of equipment) that perhaps I could do daily, when I practice, etc, I would be grateful! I also have a couple of young students who could benefit from the same.
Thanks!
Rachel
