 Re: Reed Knives

The sharpening fixture I now make is dedicated to the Westwind knife, since it uses the dowel pins in the tang of the blade to mount the blade to the fixture, but I'm working on a universal fixture that will clamp to any blade and adjust to any angle...

Robin - the Wicked Edge gadget is ingenious, but has a flaw for our purposes, in that the stone is held in a triangular relationship to the blade as it sweeps the length of the blade. This means that unless the blade has an exact circular arc (and that you mount it in the exact center of the circle) the angle at which the stone meets the blade will change along the length of the blade.

This is no problem for a slicing knife, but a disaster for a scraping knife, which is a sort of plane iron.

I've thought for years about how to adapt one of those roller-on-the-stone gadgets for reed knives, but there's no way to re-mount a blade in such a device and maintain the previous angle. So you'd have to start over each time you sharpened. Besides the roller would wear...

Thanks for the referral to my web page - I'll put up some more, better illustrative pics to make that more clear. I've got an instructive video in the works but not as much time as I'd like to finish it.

I think we need to have a new thread about the sharpening configurations of scraping knives; as I read through this thread particularly, I got t5he sense that more attention is being paid to a sharp edge than how that edge improves our results.

Gonna start a new "Reed Knife Edge Configuration" thread confined (hopefully confined to the why of edge configurations rather than the how of sharp).
