I started out on clarinet (after introductory piano, which was NOT the instrument for me) and switched to oboe after a year. That was long ago.
I ocnsider myself an oboe player who doubles on English horn, bass clarinet, clarinet, and recorders. It is fascinating to me to 'switch' from one to another; I think just the finger placement 'sets' the change in my head. Of course, an oboe reed feels pretty small after bass clarinet or English horn, but between oboe and clarinet (Bb), I haven't had big problems -- apart from key signatures and transposing.
But then again, I play in pretty small-scale venues.
