I was taught to use a wet cotton pipe cleaner, and draw it completely through the reed (in ONE direction, no 'swabbing'). If the tip is delicate, then the thumb & index finger of one hand can be used to slightly compress it as the pipe cleaner is carefully drawn through.

I've never had a reed break using this method.
