ALTHOUGH i've never played a 800 series yamaha oboe,
I believe yamaha oboes are reliable and better than most. Of course since
the company does everything from accesories to tubas, undoubtfully they are usually known for reliability and goodwill, this of course comes with a price.
I live in Malaysia where yamahas mostly dominate the student musician world, but cracking doesn't seem to be a big problem to me, because the humidity in malaysia doesn't seem to have a profound effect on wood instruments than it does in foreign countries.
This is just my opinion but if you have the money to buy a yamaha custom,
why not take a look on the other more profound brands which mainly only produce oboes or woodwind instruments? These should be a better bet and will definitely play better than a yamaha oboe, i think. But since a lot of that are very subjective, i have think i do not have the right to interpret or doubt their quality, just that Rigoutat, F.Loree, Laubin etc. would sound better to me than a Yamaha.
I like playing my 411, but i believe that won;t be enough to give u a good feedback, since i'm still young on oboe and lack of knowledge. But anyway goodluck to you in ur purchase!
