 Latin-o-boe!

Continuing the journey of experimentation, I just put up a recording on my blog.

The Caribbean/Brazilian repertoire was really popular with the public in my Army band days but I used to resent it, because it was not "classical". Now, I just enjoy its cheerfulness!

Interesting to note in this recording:
1. the guitar is really cool to play with
2. my endurance is clearly greater than last year: where notes are "just off", that is mostly due to the hot humid day getting condensation on my lips!
3. the acoustics are far superior to anything in my house so far: more on that in the next post or 2.

Robin,

Man! Great work. You are simply wailing and so relaxed and into it.

I hope all aspects of your oboe world are going so well. All live, and with a piece that would tax me for endurance.

Nicely done.

Kudos!

Thanks Craig, really appreciate your observations!
=> this just proves that enjoying the oboe is not beyond the reach of everyday Joe and Jane!

I've lately noticed that endurance is inhibited by tension or micro-spasms in the arms and wrist, especially the right. These push the oboe upward and the mouth has to resist.

Seeing my physiotherapist today, so lots to talk about!

Well, I admire your tenacity about all things oboe and otherwise.

My own post-chemo wiide-spread peripheral neuropathy (what a term the docs cook up for poisoning you to save your life!) remains in full force 9+ years now and counting. So, good.

And it really does pose some challenges for some of the music things I do.

But, these days there is not much else I prefer to do.

Life is good. Play on.

Well, I know my complaints are moderate compared to some of you here: though my problems are quite disruptive at times, they don't cancel my ability to play. I just hope that my chronicle will encourage the rest of you!

Craig, you used the word "neuropathy", that is essentially the main problem I have..... it is caused by osteo/muscular conditions, but the pains are neuropathic. If you were able to find a physiotherapist who knows Gunn-IMS (the non-electric kind), perhaps there might be a good measure of relief for you. I know you are an avid cyclist: ME TOO! But if I ever have to choose between the 2, it's the oboe I will take.

For me, music (oboe especially) is simply what I AM, take that away, and I'm essentially dead. And so I was for 10 years during engineering school..... my present day tenacity is therefore little more than catch-up!

I also want this chronicle to encourage amateurs. "Amateur" is relative: I was trained up to a half-decent pro. level, so I can re-teach myself (lessons from a real pro would still prove very beneficial). But anyone who can listen to her/himself and adjust the playing accordingly can do what I do or even better.

.... and, Craig, you definitely play far better than I do!!!!!

Robin,

You and I are both serious oboe lovers. And that distinction Vs. a music lover is for many a lost point. Oboists know the difference, but if the day comes we cannot play oboe, the music is there as a safety net. It will prove an adequate cushion I am sure.

And I expect we will still listen to more oboe music in total than the rest of it, but, just saying , its all good.

I am with you on the self-teaching. It is all about honest, deep, critical and constructive listening.

I am making good progress in a few areas these days on oboe and flute using those techniques. Always more to learn and much to improve... life is good.

Play on,

-Craig
