Nope, but he's got a handsome British look about him...

Y'know, that was my first thought, too. Pat McFarland is looking for the gent's identity...

Yes, the photo was in one of the old "Woodwind World" magazines, I suspect, as I remember the cut of his hair.

Could this possibly be a young, Wayne Raper? I remember hearing him and talking with him when he appeared in Chicago, but that was such a long time ago! Regards, Loree BF51

On second thought, let's play Sherlock H.: oboe held up high, plenty of cane showing, so probably plays on tip, chin pointed, and embouchure looks very good, (American?), hair style does look British, though, French cuffs, but does not look French. What kind of telephone is that, British or American? This isn't easy is it? Regards, Loree BF51

Thank you, Wes. I'll see if I can find a source for archived issues of Woodwind World.
OK, Sherlock - lessee... Looking at more recent pics of Rapier it doesn't strike me as likely, but I can't rule out that thought. I agree that the reed/embouchere implies an American player. The phone? My recollection of period movies suggests fatter bases than American phones, but there's not really enough of it to be certain. I used to wear French cuffs when I was young enough in the business to want to look spiffy (until I got lazy...) so that's a non-identifier.
All good thoughts...
I don't know why my first thought (and Goodwinds') was British...
I suggested to Pat McFarland that he join this thread - maybe he can cast a little light on the source of the pic.
Is it possible that you are the Don Smith I went to Foothill College with in the middle 60's? That would be a trip!

It's probably because the genius Brit in my latest novel is so handsome... sometimes I get my worlds mixed up!

Although I did go to college in the '60's (that's 19 not 18!), it was in Chicago. Where is Foothill College, anyway? Thanks for the note, though.

I was just looking through some of the Strauss Concerto videos on youtube and I came across one by a Polish group, I think, and possibly the photo in question here, is one taken some time ago of the oboist there, Mariusz Pedzialek. The ears and chin look very similar. There is, of course, a significant difference in time between the two views, so its just a guess. I see cane showing and the instrument looks to have the low, B-flat resonance/sharpening key, which I think makes it a Loree. What does anybody else think?
When I went back to look at this again, I couldn't find it!

Another possibility might be a young Thomas Indermuhle (sic?). What is the source or origin of your photo? Regards.
