So, scanning down my oboe in rehearsal today, I noticed a potential crack at the bell, on the metal lined tenon. Here are some pictures attached.

So first of all, is this a crack? And if so, I live in the Lehigh Valley are in PA, greater Philly region, I suppose. Who would be my options for repair on this?

Thanks!

Note: The crack is left and above of the "4" on the serial number. Starting at the metal ring and going down a little.

It does not look bad to me. Perhaps just filling may be good enough. But you need to go to reputable tech.

You will not regret going to John. And not far from you.

Until the third photo, I would have said it was just an "enhanced grain" in the wood. The third photo does look like you have a little crack in the spot you have highlighted.

But, as JRC says, it doesn't look bad, and it is not at a critical place.

I second the recommendation of John Symer, simply because he has been on everyone's "short list" of recommended oboe repair persons for longer than I have been playing the oboe!

That's a VERY common crack, and it's usually just a matter of filling and finishing. It's a very simple job, and I would suggest that it's not a big deal to have just about any oboe repair person fix it up.

John Symer
David Weber
Jason Onks
John Peterson

All of these guys could do it in a simple amount of time.

So far, I do not know of any oboe repair persons
in Central or Eastern Washington...

With best wishes,

To become an oboe repair person you need:
1) innate mechanical skills
2) the mind of a crime scene detective
3) the patience of Job...

I agree with that 'patience of Job' part. Thanks again, Peter.

Well said, Peter. I often think of Job sitting on that pile of ashes while I make reeds ;-))

Best,

So I gave John Symer a call, and said it's no big deal, and it's fine to keep playing on it until it becomes convenient to have it fixed! Which is good, because I have performances coming up.

Thanks again everyone!
