 Oboe angles

Something got my curosity today...

The oboe as I have read in many books is supose to be held at a 45 degree angle to your body. In my case I have a slight overbite so I hold it about 35 degrees or so, playing with good intonation. I saw a girl the other day playing it with her legs together (sitting down) and the oboe probably 2 - 3 inches over her legs, the oboe at about 45 degrees or so.

That got me thinking, does the oboe bell have to go between the legs or is it only dependent on playing angle? Is there some resisance differance where you hold the instrument?

What is the correct way?
