A wonderful read, and what a long read! All true i think... but i am sure Thomas Indermuhle still plays with circular breathing, not for the Strauss of course. But how about Pasculli, Daelli, Silvestrini or Holliger? I don't think circular breathing is unnecessary, perhaps not necessary for the majority of the orchestral and traditional solo repertoire. Obviously Ray Still's point is to say that one must know exactly how to breath musically. But not breathing and a feeling of breathlessness if also a kind of musicality, a kind of excitement which is necessary for certain pieces of music. Not being able to play or the lack of interest to play such music should not be confused with the fundamental discouragement of circular breathing i think. Perhaps Thomas does not circular breath so much with the Strauss anymore but his teaching of natural blowing sure does derive a lot from the technique of circular breathing (which i can elaborate perhaps somewhat little more in the future...). Of course, still, a fine read!
