Re: Question for players in the EU

I don't know about the particulars of working in the EU, but what I have come to realise about oboe players is that reed wise and sound wise, there is a fair degree of prejudice towards regional sounds, possibly more than most instruments.

As a short scrape player studying in the US, I have been told that there is little chance of me reaching the higher level ensembles in the program without a change of reed. As I am going back and returning to teaching in just over a year, I am not keen to do that. It seems there would be little chance of getting a paid oboe gig here if there were oboe players on the panel.

And even among short scrape players - a colleague has a sister who plays in Munich. She would love to return to Australia, but because of the particular sound required of them in Munich, she has been told there would be little chance of getting a mainstream performing job in Australia.

If study in the EU is a serious consideration, I would definitely recommend your daughter began looking into different reed styles and differences between regions and sounds. Perhaps some regions are not as sound-prejudiced as what I am experiencing in the US.
