Dear Craig,
It was a complete delight to speak with you about all things oboe!
One topic we did not get to was brought to the fore in my thinking by my dear friend Cooper Wright, and that is the difference between sheer "volume" of sound
and "projection." Cooper has also engaged me on the subject of "focus" (and opposite, "spreading") of oboe sound, and also "core" and "complexity" of sound.
Cooper is exceedingly insightful in such discussions.
I am trying to come up with a simple word or phrase (other than "shallow")
to describe oboes that, lacking "core" to the sound, seem to "skim [or skate] over the surface of the acoustical pond"...
With very best wishes,
Peter
