I buy professionally-made reeds on occasion to check my own technique. I received a batch of 4 once, and I think 3 were cracked, but in that 'fixable' way I mentioned. In the end, 3 played, and 2 were actually good.
I was curious to know if the reedmaker was aware of these cracks -- near the string, they usually happen during the tying process -- before she shipped them. If so, that would be a bad sign. If not, then perhaps she wasn't paying attention.
It IS possible that they would 'happen' en route, but in my own reed-making experience, I could only envision that with poor packing and/or TERRIBLE changes in temperature/humidity.
I'd love to hear from the reed-maker side, what kinds of experiences they've had in dealing with refunds/replacements...
