Obviously it is also possible to modify the final outcome of the profiled reed somewhat by varying the gouge and shape - doesn't that just stand all of our preconceived notions on their heads? Imagine walking into a music store anywhere in the world and buying standard oboe-reeds at $25-$30 for a box of 10 - and they all work, right out the box. Revolutionary, no? We could all start concentrating on making music for a change! One last gem from Linda Walsh's reed-making video, interview-with-famous-players section. Many of the best players there said more-or-less the same thing - you have to be able to play and make your own sound on anything. The message was "Don't obsess about your reeds. YOU are in charge of THEM. Just PLAY!". Francois Leleux explains that he always had a spare reed, in case his main reed started failing him (note: ONE spare reed). He also said that he went through about two reeds a month. That had to be the one completely jaw-dropping moment on the video. J.
