When I first bought a cor anglais reed making kit from Howarth back in the early '90s (when I had an ancient rosewood Loree cor), the thread supplied with it was dayglow yellow. Pretty nifty colour as most reedmakers used more traditional colours. I still have plenty of that spool left and use it for restitching case handles with. The oboe reed making kit I later bought had grey thread supplied with it.
Maybe they had to get rid of the least popular colours somehow and sent them out with their kits - the colour isn't exactly an important thing provided the thread is strong enough to do its job.
