Thirty-plus years ago I used a Fiber Cane reed as a beginner. It worked but I quickly moved on to real cane. Recently I was mentoring a 6th grader who had some significant difficulties. Her teacher had her use a plastic reed. I decided to get one so we could be on a level playing field. I searched the internet but couldn't find a fiber cane oboe reed, so I got the hardest plastic one I could find. It was truly awful. I keep it in my case for those times when jokers say "Why don't you just get a plastic reed?" Then it gets played and we all have a good laugh. (The student went back to real cane by the way.)
