This is a novel approach to a persistent problem. The orchestra I'm in is "evolving," and it is an interesting thing to watch. Getting the right people together is always a challenge.
I sorta wish I were a ecologist and knew more about modeling populations of interconnected species across different environments. Around here, I think there are a number "biomes" for orchestral musicians, with migration between them which is restricted by geography, ability, and even unwritten rules of semi-professional behavior. Certain species are less plentiful but more mobile and adaptable. Some biomes are dominated by a top predator (the conductor) that drives away potential prey. I could go on, but I think I should get back to work.
