 Get proper reed thread. It is best designed to stand up to the demands of wear and tear, and it has the correct tension - It allows one to pull hard enough to get a good seal, but breaks if pulled too hard.
 It's not expensive either, and there are many color options. "Rice Nylon FF" is my thread of choice.
