I have a HUGE respect for jazz players and their ability to improvise, especially leading into those funky harmonies and modes. Or even classical players (like Gabriella Montero on piano) who can improvise melding one tune into another.
I feel crippled, as a traditionally-trained classical player, for being such a slave to the sheet. I have composed some very decent pieces (a lot of garbage too), but I can't seem to make the leap from composing to improvising a string of motives that make sense.
I take it, Oboe Craig, that you improvise on these flicks, right? Any suggestions on how to learn improv., considering that my time is really limited?
Thanks!
