Oboe and english horn in a non-traditional setting

There was a thread re: oboe in pop music a while back, and it branched into jazz, rock, etc.

I am not sure how a piece like this fits any of those descriptions though.

This is a new YouTube video release of a musical treatment of poetry by Robert Graves by my good friend Michael DeLalla.

It features oboe and eventually a duet between oboe and english horn.

This is from a reunion of my old group Oxymora in 1995 to contribute to Michael's holiday CD at that time. It used Oxymora and a couple of guest artists.

When we used to play it live, I played a recorder and the mandolin player covered the english horn on an alto recorder.

It was fun covering those parts on oboe and english horn for this project.

As with all Oxymora music, some parts are written and some are improvised.

And that is GREAT fun!

Its something to start off your holiday season this year.

Cheers, and peace to you. Happy Thanksgiving!

What a LOVELY composition and how beautifully performed!
Your sound suits the style perfectly - haunting yet alive.

I'm not a fan of modern music, but this is a fusion style that really strikes a pleasant cord (chord?). This is a tonal piece, but with strange modalities and the integration of discordances.... really well crafted!

I've always considered Christmas to have a ghostly quality to it, maybe it's because I was introduced to Dicken's Christmas Carol at a very young age.

This is just a great clip! My compliments to you all and don't be shy to announce others like that.

Hi Craig!

As you know, I love the work you have done with Oxymora. Is this track going to be part of the new CD project? Who is the female vocalist?

My favorite moment here is just after the main title, where the oboe comes in with such dead-on pitch accuracy that it gives me chills!

Well played!

Susan

BTW, Craig's oboe is a Covey, the twin of mine.

Thanks Susan and Robin.

This was actually done on my old Covey in 1995. Jana Vitols was the soprano and Michael DeLalla did mutiple male voice parts, plus played 12-stg guitar.

This is Michael's arrangement and the piece appears on his 'There Is One Story And Onse Story Only' CD from 1995. Hie web-site Falling Mountain still has it in stock, I think.
