I also thought that it was very pretty music.
About the flute player....
First of all, what did you think of her when she played the recorder ( at least that is what it looked and sounded like to me) before switching to the transverse flute?
You could be right that she would sound better playing a higher octave, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Which makes me wonder in deference to your comment about all the strings and her sounding good with the harp and perhaps a single oboe, etc.
I wonder if this piece wasn't originally arranged as a quartet of flute, oboe, violin and harp?
Or maybe even a trio of harp, flute and oboe without all of the other strings?
