Hi, I was the one who suggested profiled cane. Most oboists don't use profiled cane. For clipping the reed open and clipping up to pitch I would suggest a single edge razor blade. Many times you can find these at a hardware store or drugstore. You'll need a plaque and a cutting block. To clip the reed open after it has been tied on. you put the blades on the cutting block and cut with the single edged razor blade. Some people use their reed knife but I find a razor blade is fine. You don't have to worry about fishskin. Just tie the reed on and test for a seal. If it seals don't put fishskin on. As you tie the reed on to the staple the sides should close at the same time....not one side and then the other. If the latter occurs then it might leak. As the reed closes on the sides it sometimes splits. It happens as the cane is being bent around the staple . Make sure you soak the cane for about 20 minutes before tying it on. Just a short note on the mandrel. It holds the staple as you are tying the reed. If it doesn't fit well the staplle might move around a bit......just make sure the fit is pretty snug so it doesn't move too much. Professional oboists are very fussy with all this stuff. For your purposes you just want to get the reed together and be able to make it play. Refine things later. John
