I have learned Oboe for 3 months. I don't know why I am just fond of playing Oboe. I am desparately looking for a good Oboe teacher, but I seems cannot find one in Hong Kong.
Any recommend for me? I did ask for several piano shops and centres. But people said there are only Clarinet teahers, no Oboe teachers. What can I do?

I am currently with the Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong and there are plenty of oboe players from HK that i have seen here! Go to the HKAPA (academy of performing arts) and ask, or simply, go to the HK Philharmonic, plenty of people!
Regards,
Howard

Victor Tam is an excellent oboe player who studied with Mr. Lifschey and Mr. Caldwell. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Victor-Tam

I am originally from Hong Kong. May I ask if you started on your own? I have not had personal experience with the current teachers in Hong Kong, but I know which ones are well-known or have many students. If you would like to know more, I can give you more information privately.

I would recommend you going to:
http://www.hkapa.edu/asp/music/music_department.asp?lang=eng&mode=gui#WindDept
Take the oboe lessons as a non-matriculated student. Hopefully, they will do a good job at teaching you and correcting all your bad habits.
Huang, Zheng (Oboe) and Yiu, Song-lam (Oboe) are part time faculty at HKAPA. Anderson, John (Oboe) Visting HKAPA.

The above is the head of woodwinds and u may want have a word with him about where you are at with the oboe and how far you want to go. Hopefully, he will tie you up with a suitable teacher.
However, a word of caution....Oboists in Asia, already in orchestras generally dont have time of day to take students for lessons. If they do, from experience, they also hold back, not teach, or leave out some details and what nots. The "kung fu" master syndrome, where key and important skills are never shared or taught !
Good luck.

I 2nd the recommendation to look for Victor Tam, if you are truly serious about learning for the oboe. I heard some of his students play today. American style, and very beautiful playing for their age!

Well, I have moved back to Hong Kong for almost a year. The quality of teaching definitely varies here. No lack of young students though. Some start far too young in fact!

I have been learning oboe for half year (2015) and i find that my teacher really know everything about oboe even all matters of all musical periods.
On the other hands, He knows how to teach and facilitate the student's progress according to their strengths and weaks without reservation.
Now, I am going to plan to get my Grade 8 exam in 2017 and it is worthy to pay and learn from him.
Here is his website: http://hongkongdoublereeds.com/
If anyone are interested, pls take a look.
Achieving Grade 8 with result Merit or above within 2 years is my goal.
