Hi, Try examining the crow of the reed. If your reed doesn't crow at a C or B then you will likely have trouble. If the reed crows too high....say C sharp or D....the reed is probably too closed. Short term solutions.....soak in hot water and if necessary pull the reed out 1 or 2 mm. then mark the cork with a pen. If the reed is too closed.....it might not even crow.....it will just have a single pitch. If the crow is low.....say Bb or A.... then the reed is too open or the cane is very soft. Try not to soak open reeds very long......in fact try playing them dry....they will take on moisture as you play.. If you play a reed dry....check that it is sealing.... finger over the cork end of the reed.....suck air out....the reed should stay shut for a short time and then pop. It it doesn't seal then check where it is leaking. Dip the reed in water and then put your finger over the corked end. Blow gently and observe where bubbles appear. If the bubbles are near or from the thread area then you should wrap some glad wrap around the area. This sandwich wrap is problematic to keep it in place as it wants to unravel. You can tie a bit of reed thread around it to keep it in place. There is also a product specifically for this purpose but you would have to send away for it or go to a Oboe Specialty shop. I put clear nail polish over leaking oboe reeds but I would suggest a less toxic approach to others. ps. you could also use tape over the saran wrap. That might work for awhile. Good Luck john
