Was reading a few of the comments recently and noticed how many of you seem to be the owner of more than 1 oboe. I'm so jealous but my Buffet has served me well to date. How many oboes does everyone have just out of curiosity??

1. An old Fox Renard oboe that I bought via Ebay in the UK when I suddenly became interested in oboes.
No LH F but extremely well made. Now on free loan to my oboe teacher here in Italy for a young girl who wants to learn but parents can't afford an oboe.
2. A Packer oboe, also from the UK, that I hate, but still use for practice in the basement. Almost threw it away in disgust but got it repaired... with apology from Packer and explanation. Customer service was amazing. Tone is okay but let down by poor quality keywork.
3. Rigoutat Riec that is fantastic and sounds great, despite their customer service being pretty non existent.

Your comments are hilarious! =D I heard a story of a man who travelled from South East Asia, flew almost 20 hours to get to Amsterdam, was in a rush to get back, so took a train to France (in Winter) on the same day, walked through snow, got into the Loree work shop. Perhaps it was a bit too early in the morning and the shop just opened, but the only thing the person on the front desk could say was:"Leave your oboe and come back tomorrow."

Anyways, i own:
A Buffet Greenline.
A Loree DM, recently overhauled and worked upon by Yan Petrov of Sound Alchemy, and i am selling it because i can't afford having 2 oboes! Anyone interested? =D

I have two;
- Loree c+3 with added thumbplate*
- Marigaux/Strasser 801 with added thumbplate (full conservatory version, ca. 1975)
- I also have a lovely Loree EH on loan from a colleague.
I recently took my Marigaux back from an ex-student, who hadn't touched it in more than a year. I will lend it out to a worthy student iff
a) he agrees to take me as a teacher
b) he agrees to insure or indemnify me for loss or damage, and
c) he lives locally.
This is because I treat this instrument as my Emergency Spare. If I have a problem on my Loree I want to be able to get hold of another thumbplate oboe quickly, with a minimum of fuss.

* The thumbplate is a largely English variant that uses the LH thumb as an alternative fingering to RH 1st finger, for A/Bb and B/C transitions.

Just the two oboes:
#1 oboe - Kingwood Howarth S5 (1995)
#2 oboe - Plastic Selmer Signet Soloist 104
Plus a Marigaux 930 oboe d'amore (1979) and 903 cor anglais (1998) - all are dual system (conservatoire with added thumbplate) and the d'amore is full German spec - auto 8ves, conservatoire 1-2-3 system, F resonance vent, roller F key and low B-C link. A thumbplate and 2nd 8ve touch were added to it after I bought it.
I missed out on an all plastic full Gillet conservatoire Linton cor (probably a Malerne stencil) on eBay a while back - wouldn't have minded that as a #2 cor.

I currently have only one oboe, my old Marigaux 901, and a Lorée EH. I had a Prestini, but that was stolen and not recovered; however, the insurance settlement will be enough to give me a start on a second oboe, which I will purchase if only to get the full replacement value on the insurance settlement.

I own and play regularly on:
Kreul - 1960 - thumbplate. Best for large scale orchestral work.
Marigaux - 1966 - dual system. Best for chamber music.
Marigaux - 1972 - dual system. Best for 2nd oboe work.
Lorée - 1974 - Oboe d'amore, dual system. Amazing instrument.
Oehler - 1928 Cor Anglais, dual system. Even more amazing than the Lorée. Began life as fully automatic conservatoire and was later modified to semi-automatic dual system with low C banana key and a cancellable B/C link for D' - D slurs! - no need to panic in Richard Strauss!
Ward & Winterbourne - 1980 - Cor Anglais, thumbplate. Very useful as a reserve.
Moeck - 1990 - Baroque oboe
All were bought second hand and still provide me (and hopefully the audiences I play for) with endless pleasure!

I have two, quite different, and I use them for different purposes (1, small ensemble, pit orchestra; 2, for symphony).
A plastic or half-plastic oboe would be a good idea IF you played outdoors in the snow from time to time, but I'm a far cry from having to do that, so both of mine are grenadilla.

Oboes that I play:
1.) Marigaux (year 1971) basically 901 / Prestini system, Conservatory 1-2-3, originally automatic octaves, about 5 years ago I took it to Marigaux for overhaul and replating and I got them to add a bit of extra hardware in order to have automatic octaves or semi automatic octaves depending on my mood.
2.) Marigaux 901 (1980's/1990's) a normal Conservatory system with semi-automatic octaves.
3.) Cabart 74 ( I do not know what year, I guess late 70's, early 80's), nice little Conservatory system oboe with basically everything except the split D (LH3), which I mainly use to make reeds for sale (I would not use the Marigaux for this purpose because "all" the reeds are good with a Marigaux).
4.) Plastic Linton HRS, which I use for outdoors.
Other oboes and English Horns (2 of them) are basically for collecting and /or admiring them.

The one and only I `ve got is a Dupin from the 1980`s; after it had a hairline crack professionally repaired last week together with a COA, it seems to sound better than ever..! Keep my fingers crossed!

My d'amore is still fully automatic and the addition of the 2nd 8ve touch is fitted to the part of the mechanism that keeps both the 8ve vent pads closed (which is in the same position as the 2nd 8ve key barrel and operated by the back 8ve touch).
I had the extra touch fitted for security as I kept instinctively reaching for the 2nd 8ve touch (instead of using the thumb touch) on large intervals or jumps to high A up to C (as you'd do with semi automatic 8ves) and kept hitting the trill key overlevers with the side of LH1 instead, so inadvertently opening them didn't help.
A 2nd 8ve touchpiece can be fitted to most fully automatic oboes that don't have one (some older automatics may have both touches fitted) and duplicates the thumb 8ve key.

I only have one, a wood Incagnoli, which I love. It has the Prestini system, with the thumb low B. This enables both a LH and RH C#.
I am a doubler, and get only occasional oboe gigs. I couldn't imagine having two oboes, but if I suddenly started getting more gigs, and outdoor ones at that, I might go the plastic route.
