The instruments were stolen out of my home while I was at work today. I came home to an open back door and no instruments.

Keep an eye out for them on ebay, craigslist etc. and circulate descriptions to local music stores. I got my Strasser-Marigaux back that way in 1976, after it was taken from my home.
Only the instruments were taken?

Some cameras, a digital recorder, an indoor-outdoor thermometer...nothing that valuable compared to the instruments.

It's always devastating for players when they have an instrument they're familliar with stolen and never recovered as replacements aren't easy to come by as they're never exactly the same as what they had and what they were used to.
It's such a violation having your property broken into - bad enough having a car radio stolen, but far worse to have your own home broken into as that's where you should really be at ease. I've had both my car and house broken into on seperate occasions, fortunately I hadn't moved any instruments in as building work was being done before I moved in, but a load of power tools were stolen which is bad enough.

Oh Mike, we're all so sorry.
I had a house break-in and lost a baritone horn (my son's) and a fantastic mandolin. During the 2007 wildfires I lost a flute and percussion stuff.
I agree -- the instruments hurt most of all.
I checked with my insurance co. (householders/renters) and they required appraisals on any instrument worth over $2500. To insure instruments by a specialty company is pretty expensive. You might sink a bundle into that and never have an incident.
I don't know what else to tell you.

Do you need me to tell you to get to know all the pawn shops in Escondido? That's one of the first things the cops will tell you in my experience. These smash-and-grab burglars aren't interested in selling your high-quality oboes for a good price on eBay next month--they want to unload their hot goods NOW and they want the fast cash NOW, and that means a pawnshop. And nearly always the closest one to the scene of the crime.
The cops will tell you, "We don't have time to check out pawnshops, we circulate a list of stolen goods and rely on the pawnshop owners to contact US."
You can imagine how well that works.
Then they will go on to say, "But YOU can go around and contact them."
I would strongly suggest this. Be non-confrontational, because your average pawnshop owner does not knowingly accept stolen goods, so you don't wanna alienate him. Make the circuit, get to know the owners, get them to remember you. Take a picture of an oboe with you, "Like a clarinet, see? Only a bit smaller..."
And if you see one or more of your horns, you might consider just buying them back, rather than attempting to go the whole law-and-order route, which is unlikely to actually put a perp behind bars.

that is so sad. Escondido thiefs would not likely know the value of what they've taken. The only shop I know of is King's Pawn, on Valley Parkway, east of the hospital.
Good luck, Mike. And if you don't find or recover them, may better instruments find their way to you (it happened to me after the fire...)

I've scoped out King's Pawn and a bunch of other Escondido shops, but haven't actually interacted with any of the people there yet. I'm talking with police and getting varying advice from different detectives on how to approach the shops, and will take Dutchy's advice into the mix as well.

another thought is to try to local music shops that sell on consignment: Band Central Station and another shop in Vista; the Windsmith in downtown San Diego.

I really hope that you get your instruments back and in good shape as well.
Unlike a camera or other such object, an instrument is a very personal item, and as such, it seems as a personal attack, a rape as you will.
I also hope that they catch the culprits that have stolen these items and make the scum pay to the full extent of the law!

Good News! The Lorée English horn and the Marigaux oboe have been recovered. The Prestini oboe and the ukulele remain missing.
The police linked a suspect to my case based on fingerprints. The other items taken from my house had already been sold on Craigslist or to pawn shops, but the police say that they've checked the local pawnshops already. So, if anyone notices a Prestini oboe out there, purchased on craigslist, with serial number H7 73 11 29, please let me know!
