My 2c: I find that on the day of a performance, I need lots of quiet time to clear the head and keep the body rested. I may listen to recorded performances of the piece(s) in order to put my brain in the right place. In the days prior to the performance, I'll ramp up my level of concentration on the music from the typical rehearsal level and begin treating the last few rehearsals as requiring performance levels of play. This is to help me peak at the right time and so the additional adrenaline of public performance doesn't throw me off. Since I'm not a pro musician or an athlete, the closest analogy I can make to it is preparing for a big exam or giving a public speech. The key is to be "in the moment" at the time of performance, not having an out of body experience in unusual and unforgiving circumstances.
