Ian, you've hit the nail on the head - it was the form of the shape of the jeweller's file that looked perfect for the job.
Do you have any idea of what grade jeweller's file I should look for? I'm assuming the finist possible. The bassoonist said he had been given his years ago by his teacher who had someone in his family who was a jeweller so he doesn't know anything precise about what exactly it is.
